===================================== Introduction ========================================

DELFTBLUE DAYBREAK, 1996

Artist: Hugo Kaagman - Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Image:

Oil on canvas, 100x100cm

Featuring a 'daybreak' of a plate rising up above a horizon of traditional Dutch tileware,
this stencilled and hand-painted piece, itself square like a giant tile, makes a positive
statement about Holland and its associated imagery. Hugo, a renowned Dutch artist who draws
on icons from his native country, aims 'to use the traditions of the past and modernise
them for the future', and in this work he employs apparently highly traditional images -
a tree, a windmill, a cow, birds and a cyclist - with his own designs and contemporary
images in conventional blue and white, mirrored and repeated, but combined in a completely
new way. In addition, the image contains a great deal of information on the history of
Dutch tiles from the 16th and 17th centuries, such as Spanish-influenced mauresks, Chinese
Wan-Li meanders derived from the Eastern porcelain carried by Dutch ships, leaves,
spider-head motifs and the famous bull's-head corner motifs. Plump leaves and roses
encircle the work, which combines nostalgia with a regard for the future.

Hugo says about this image: 'I realised that this was not the time to be ironic about the
subject; in fact it is serious, rather romantic and abstract. It is a Delft blue mandala on
which to meditate and to think about what is left over from tradition. What do we take with
us to the next millennium?'
